Tools / Vehicle costs

What will registering this vehicle cost in Minnesota?

Enter a price, a fuel type and a county. You get sales tax, registration tax, wheelage and fees, and a gas, plug-in hybrid and electric comparison over the years you plan to keep it.

An estimate, not tax advice. It uses the statutes and the fee pages of Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) as read on . Confirm the total with DVS or a deputy registrar before you pay.

Your vehicle

Dollars, before trade-in. Sales tax is figured on this.

Registration tax is figured on the manufacturer's suggested retail price. For a used vehicle, enter the original MSRP if you know it.

Fuel type

The plug-in minimums drop on July 1, 2027. The date decides which applies.

Situation
Add your own yearly running costs (optional)

We have no sourced fuel or electricity prices, so nothing is assumed. Type what you expect to spend each year and the chart adds it.

Your periods cross July 1, 2027. Later periods use the lower plug-in minimum, which is why the table below changes partway.

Same price, county and start date for all three. The gap is the state's fuel-type surcharge and nothing else.

What this does not know

Title and filing bundle
We use $26: $12 filing fee, $2.25 technology surcharge, $8.25 title fee and $3.50 public safety fee. The statute fixes the $12 filing fee and the DVS fee page lists the others. A combined title-and-registration transaction might carry a second filing fee or technology surcharge that the page does not spell out, so your total at the counter could differ by a few dollars.
Renewals
We charge the $8 renewal filing fee and nothing else in years after the first. We did not confirm whether a technology surcharge also applies on renewal.
Year 11 and later
The statute makes the percentage part a flat $20 from the eleventh year, so a gas vehicle pays $30 in registration tax. For plug-ins we read the surcharge as continuing at the minimum, because ten percent of MSRP is below it for most vehicles.
Wheelage tax
Amounts are the county list DVS published as of January 1, 2026. Dakota, Isanti and Mower are scheduled to rise to $20 on January 1, 2027, and the calculator applies that. Counties not on the list pay nothing.
Used vehicles and trade-ins
Sales tax here is 6.875 percent of the purchase price you enter. A trade-in, a private sale priced below book value, or a purchase already taxed elsewhere can change what DVS charges.
The July 1, 2027 change
The plug-in minimums fall on July 1, 2027, from $150 to $100 for electric and from $75 to $50 for plug-in hybrids. We apply whichever is in force on the first day of each registration period you enter.

The same rules produce the published tables in our vehicle registration cost research, and automated tests check that every figure there matches this calculator's code.

How this was made

Date checked
Sources opened and read on . Rules and prices change; confirm with the source before you act.
Method
The rates come from the statutes and DVS pages linked here. The calculator and the published research tables run the same code, and tests check every published figure. Nothing is sent anywhere: the arithmetic runs in your browser. We did not call DVS or visit a deputy registrar.
