Seven North Shore state parks, and what sets each one apart
A park-by-park reading of the Minnesota DNR's own pages, with hours, fees and 2024 visit counts side by side, for choosing where to stop on Lake Superior's shore instead of treating the parks as one long waterfall.

The North Shore state parks read alike from a distance: a river, a waterfall, the big lake. The DNR's individual park pages show more difference than that, in what each park is built around, how much help you will find there, and when. This guide goes through them roughly southwest to northeast, using what those pages and a few other public sources said on November 6, 2026. It is desk research. Nobody from MNIRL has yet visited these parks for this guide.
| Park | Staffed hours listed | Permit and parking notes on the page |
|---|---|---|
| Gooseberry Falls | Visitor center and Nature Store daily, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. | No permit for the wayside and visitor center lot. |
| Split Rock Lighthouse (state park) | Park office daily, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but may be unstaffed; call ahead | Buy online or by QR code outside the office if it is closed. Lighthouse is a separate site (see below). |
| Tettegouche | Winter (mid-October to mid-May) Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; summer 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. | The page also says the visitor center is open daily, but lists winter hours only for weekdays. |
| Temperance River | Ranger station noon to 3 p.m. daily; closed November 6 to 10, 2026 | Buy online or by QR code if closed. |
| Cascade River | Office 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from April 22, 2026; call 218-387-6000 | Buy online or by QR code if closed. Parking is half a mile west of the entrance, on Highway 61. |
| Judge C.R. Magney | No office. Staff daily 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day only | Contact Cascade River State Park the rest of the year. |
| Grand Portage | Information desk, gift shop and display hall daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Standard Time | Phones can jump an hour ahead after catching a signal from Ontario. |
Gooseberry Falls: the easy first stop
Gooseberry is the one set up for a short stop. The DNR lists a visitor center with a large nature store, and says no vehicle permit is needed to park in the wayside and visitor center lot. Cyclists get a 2.5-mile paved segment of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail through the park, which the DNR says now makes a continuous paved trail from Gooseberry to Silver Bay. The DNR also reports a restored Superior Hiking Trail section north of the park, reached from the visitor center by hiking to Fifth Falls.

The DNR's fact page recorded 758,417 visits to Gooseberry in 2024, the most of any state park that year, and the highest of the North Shore parks it lists.
Split Rock Lighthouse: two organizations, two fees
The lighthouse and the state park around it are run separately. The DNR says the lighthouse is a Minnesota Historical Society site, not managed by the park, with its own tour fee. The Historical Society's hours page, for the schedule that runs October 20, 2026 to January 4, 2027, lists an $8 grounds pass that does not include the lighthouse or keeper's home, a $25 Keeper's Tour, and a $20 Christmas at the Lighthouse program from November 27 to December 27, 2026. A state park vehicle permit is a third, separate purchase; the Historical Society says one is required when its visitor center is closed.
| Item | Listed |
|---|---|
| Hours, October 20, 2026 to January 4, 2027 | Monday and Thursday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; closed Tuesday and Wednesday |
| Grounds Pass | $8, with no access to the lighthouse or keeper's home |
| Keeper's Tour | $25; MNHS members get 20 percent off. Tours at 12:00, 1:00 and 2:30 p.m.; 10 people per tour |
| Christmas at the Lighthouse, November 27 to December 27, 2026 | $20, free for MNHS members. Tours at 10:30 a.m., 12:00 and 1:30 p.m. |
The park side has Pebble Beach, the Day Hill hike, cart-in and backpack campsites, electric sites in the new Shipwreck Creek Campground, and an electric all-terrain track chair that anyone with a need can reserve, available only during staffed office hours. The DNR recorded 558,110 visits in 2024.
Google lists the state park and the lighthouse as two places. The Historical Society's page says the grounds pass has no lighthouse access, so rely on the Historical Society's page for what the lighthouse requires.
Tettegouche: cliffs and climbers
Tettegouche's page leans toward rock: cliffs, climbing, peregrine falcons. Its short-visit suggestions are a walk out to Shovel Point or a trip up Palisade Head, reached from Highway 61 about 1.5 miles southwest of the visitor center. In winter, the DNR says, Palisade Head involves a short hike. The page lists winter visitor center hours (mid-October to mid-May) of Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., while also saying the center is open daily, so weekend winter hours are unclear. It also lists a free electric vehicle charger at the main visitor center lot (a 120-volt Clipper Creek station with two cables).

The DNR recorded 537,824 visits in 2024.
Temperance River: the gorge
Pick this one if the gorge is the point. The DNR suggests riverside trails along it and adds a plain warning to watch your step. Ranger station hours are short, listed as noon to 3 p.m. daily and subject to change, so buy a permit before you arrive.
On November 6, 2026 the DNR page carried a notice that the Temperance River ranger station would be closed from November 6 through November 10, 2026, for staffing reasons. After that date, read the park's alerts instead of this paragraph.
The DNR does not publish a 2024 visit count for this park.
Cascade River: a short loop and a long shoreline
Cascade River's page offers a half-mile hike on the Lower Loop past the Cascades, five small falls, and Cascade Falls itself, plus more than a mile of Lake Superior shoreline trail for hiking or cross-country skiing. Parking is half a mile west of the entrance on Highway 61. If the ranger station is closed, the DNR says to buy a permit online or use the QR codes posted outside it. This office also takes questions for Judge C.R. Magney outside summer.
Judge C.R. Magney: the least staffed
Magney is home to the Devil's Kettle Trail, which the DNR says was named in a USA Today readers' vote on hiking trails, per the DNR. It has no office. Staff are on duty only from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the campground closes from mid-October to early May, and the DNR warns the entrance road may not be plowed right after a snow. Plan as if nobody will be there to ask.

Grand Portage: the end of the road, on Band land
According to the DNR, Grand Portage is the only state park located within an Indian Reservation, on land owned by the Band. It also calls High Falls Minnesota's tallest waterfall. The trail there is listed as an easy one-mile round trip with three viewing decks; the 4.5-mile round trip to Middle Falls is described as very rugged, with several hundred feet of elevation change and at least three hours of hiking. Interpretive displays introduce Grand Portage Ojibwe culture and were developed with direction from community members. One small warning: phones can pick up a signal from Ontario here and jump ahead an hour.

The DNR page we read does not describe accessibility for the trail to the big falls, so ask the park before you go. The DNR lists 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the information desk.
Common mistakes
Assuming every park has an office: Magney has none, and Temperance River's is open three hours a day. Treating the lighthouse and the park as one ticket.
How the parks differ by situation
For a short stop with services, the DNR's pages point to Gooseberry. For waterfalls on a short loop, Cascade River. For cliffs and the shore, Tettegouche. For the gorge, Temperance. For solitude in off-season, Magney, with the caveat that the road may be unplowed. For the northernmost stop and Ojibwe interpretation, Grand Portage. These are readings of the DNR's own descriptions, not recommendations or a ranking.
What to do
Check the park's alerts page the day you leave. Buy a permit online before you arrive if the office hours are short; vehicle permits are covered in our guide to what the permit costs and when you don't need one. Book Split Rock Keeper's Tours through the Historical Society, and confirm the day of the week. In winter, ask about Palisade Head and Magney road conditions.
What we could not confirm
No one has walked these trails for this guide, so trail conditions, parking on a given day and crowd levels are unchecked. We could not find 2024 visit counts for Temperance River, Cascade River, Magney or Grand Portage, or any 2025 annual counts. Weekend winter hours at the Tettegouche visitor center are unclear. Accessibility of the Grand Portage trail is not described on the DNR page we read. The Historical Society's fall Keeper's Tour days do not match the 2026 calendar. We do not reproduce visitor ratings or reviews; each park's Google Maps listing is linked in the sources.
